Charakteristik
Die beiden Thessalonicherbriefe sind im Namen des Paulus an die Gemeinde in Thessalonich geschrieben worden – der 1Thess als erster Paulusbrief überhaupt zwischen 50 und 51 von Korinth aus. Beide Briefe haben nahezu den gleichen Inhalt; lediglich in den Aussagen zur Eschatologie unterscheiden sich beide scheinbar diametral. Anhand dessen wird diskutiert,
- ob 2Thess pseudepigraph ist oder nicht,
- und ob die andere eschatologische Aussage in 2Thess als Ergänzung oder Korrektur zum 1Thess zu lesen ist.
Die gemeinsame Aussage der beiden Briefe bezüglich der Eschatologie dürfte wohl sein, dass der genaue Zeitpunkt der Parusie nicht bestimmt werden kann.
Ebenso markant wie die Positionen bezüglich der Eschatologie ist das – im Vergleich zu anderen Paulusbriefen – dominierende Lob der Gemeinde in Thessalonich. Bei den Ermahnungen geht es nicht zuerst um Behebung von Missständen, sondern um eine Ermutigung, die Anteilhabe an der göttlichen Vollkommenheit konsequent im täglichen Leben sichtbar werden zu lassen.
