Charakteristik
Der Philemonbrief ist hinsichtlich seiner Gattung als Bittbrief zu bezeichnen, der auch Elemente des Empfehlungsschreibens aufweist. Paulus schreibt an eine Privatperson (Philemon), hat aber die Hausgemeinde des Philemon im Blick, so dass es sich nicht um einen reinen Privatbrief, sondern – wie in allen anderen Paulusbriefen – um einen Gemeindebrief handelt. Thematisch handelt der Brief von Onesimus, dem entlaufenen Sklaven des Philemon: Wie soll ihn Philemon behandeln, da Onesimus nun Christ geworden ist? Die Themenfelder „Sozialer Status & Glaube“ sowie „Rangfolge unter Christen“ werden berührt.
