Charakteristik
Da beim 1. Johannesbrief die äußerlichen Merkmale eines antiken Briefes fehlen (Verfasser- & Adressatenangabe, Präskript, Grüße usw.), ist wohl die Bezeichnung „geistlicher Traktat“ angemessener. Andererseits werden die Empfänger wie in einer Predigt angesprochen, so dass das Schriftstück auch als „verschriftete Homilie“ (Predigt) bezeichnet werden könnte.
Thema das Briefes ist die Liebe Gottes zu den Menschen, die in Jesus Christus offenbar wird, und die die Liebe der Menschen untereinander (Geschwisterliebe) ermöglicht (1Joh 4,7-11): Der Verfasser will angesichts der Situation, dass Christusleugner die Gemeinden des johanneischen Kreises spalten, die Glaubenden in ihrem Glauben an Christus als Sohn Gottes vergewissern und sie zur geschwisterlichen Liebe ermutigen.
Der 2. und 3. Johannesbrief sind echte Briefe, der 2Joh ein Gemeindebrief anlässlich des Auftretens von Irrlehrern, und der 3Joh ein privater Empfehlungsbrief angesichts von Anfeindungen durch ein Gemeindeoberhaupt.
