Charakteristik
Der Jakobusbrief, eines katholischen (= an alle gerichteten) Schreiben des Neuen Testaments, will Anleitung zu rechtem Verhalten geben („Weisheitsliteratur“) und ist dementsprechend paränetisch (ermahnend) ausgerichtet. Theologischer Hauptgegenstand des Briefes ist die Ethik, also das Problem, ob das Tun mit dem Sein als Glaubender, der in Gottes Lebensordnung verwurzelt ist, übereinstimmt. Pointiert kommt das in dem unreformatorisch anmutenden Gedanken 2,14.17 zum Ausdruck: Der Glaube ohne Werke sei tot in sich selber und könne also auch nicht allein selig machen. Besondere Beachtung bei der Ermahnung erfährt das Verhaltensfeld der alltäglichen Umgangssprache. Stilistisch ist der Wechsel zwischen Spruchreihen und kleinen Abhandlungen charakteristisch.
